SELECTIONS FROM
NOT-POKÉMON DUALITY
Below are six selections from the 80-song soundtrack I created for my RPG. If you'd like to listen to more songs, follow the link at the bottom of the page to access the full playlist. It's cool to see how my style has changed and adapted while writing this soundtrack over the last two years.
THE LAST STAND. Not-Pokemon Duality has two main storylines, each affected by the player's actions. This track plays in one of the later boss fights in one of the story routes. I had to make sure this track felt just as important as the scene and battle it accompanies. I was inspired by the string instruments used in the TemTem soundtrack while writing this piece, and I incorporated leitmotifs from earlier points in the game to tie it all together.
ROUTE 19 is one of the later area areas in the game. By this point, the story has gotten pretty intense, so I wanted the music to reflect that. I used some repeating dramatic piano chords and low strings to add intensity, and an emotional violin melody to try to get the feeling through to the player.
A DUEL FOR HISTORY. This piece plays during an important cutscene halfway through the game. It was the first time I composed something that had to be synced with visuals on screen. It was fun getting to introduce and develop new motifs that build throughout the scene.
BATTLE TEAM RAZE. This plays during encounters with Team Raze, the antagonists in the game. My goal for this piece was to have it be more intense than the regular battle theme, but still feel fun, as most Team Raze fights aren't very challenging.
CEIBAH SHRINE. This was one of the first overworld tracks I made for the game. It's a slower version of one of the leitmotifs used throughout the game. While it is relatively simple, I think it works well.
ROUTE 9 is a rainy, Autumn-themed area. I wanted to experiment with music in the "Lo-Fi" genre, so I decided to use lower-quality soundfonts, as well as some vinyl static and rain to get the full effect.
